P2 B
P2 B – Genre
The main genre that Star Wars: The Force Awakens fits into is the Science
Fiction genre (or Sci-Fi for short). It is pretty apparent why Star Wars: The
Force Awakens is classed as a Science Fiction film with its outer space
setting, spaceships, plasma guns, alien languages and most iconically,
lightsabers. The Star Wars universe clearly differs widely from our own which
is what gives viewers that sense of escapism, letting them let go of their
worries and doubts for just a few hours before returning back to reality. This
is what helps solidify Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Sci-Fi film as
escapism is exactly what Science Fiction films are made for and is the main
reason this genre has become so popular in the modern day film industry.
However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is not without its sub genres… One
sub-genre that Star Wars fits into is the Space Opera sub-genre. It fits into
the Space Opera sub-genre because it is an adventurous journey through space
which is exactly what a Space Opera is, evidence for this comes in the form of
space battles, warp speed etc. which all take place in space crafts in outer
space. No two Space Opera genre films are seen as the same as every film in
this genre has its own unique set of characters, physics and storyline and Star
Wars: The Force Awakens does not fall short of this either.
Another example of a sub-genre which
Star Wars fits into is Romance, although this is of course not as prominent in
the film as the Science Fiction elements it is still undoubtedly in there and
has been ever since the original Star Wars films, primarily pointing towards
Han Solo and Princess Leia. In the newest instalment; The Force Awakens, it is
fairly obvious that there may be something budding between main protagonists
Finn and Rey but this is yet to be confirmed. Furthermore; Han Solo and Princess
Leia return for the seventh instalment adding to the already present elements
of Romance within the film.
